Water heaters consume 13% of all energy used in America’s residences and 6% of all energy in commercial buildings. This energy consumption is massive—heating water in only our homes and apartments each year consumes over 100 billion kWh of electricity (enough to light and heat more than 10 million homes); roughly 1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas (equivalent to over 100 days worth of imports from Canada); over 900 million gallons of fuel oil; and over 500 million gallons of LPG
Buildings account for approximately one-third of total primary energy use in the United States. In turn, heating water—in houses, restaurants, hotels, schools, commercial and industrial facilities, and other buildings—is a significant share of building energy consumption. Heating water consumes approximately 3.8 quads of energy each year; this is the equivalent of 19% of U.S. natural gas production.
