Pool heating of a typical 32,000 gallon indoor pool is an expensive proposition when using propane. This pool had been fired using two 1,000 gallon propane tanks. A solar furnace replaced the dinosaur daze in December, 2006 using coaxial evacuated tube solar collector array.
Using solar energy---the "fuel" is Free For the Taking---the fossil fuel furnace was removed from the mechanical room to make room for solar plumbing.

This solar pool heating system utilizes a sophisticated differential controller with an energy meter. Both instantaneous and cumulative kilo watts are recorded. This actual photo on a sunny day in January, measured on a pyranometer at 890 watts / M2, measured 15.4 kW of enegy heating the pool. Typical performance on a bright, sunny day with snow on the ground increases dramatically. The vacuum insulation of the collector body will absorb solar radiation regardless of winter ambient temperatures.
